The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Wellbeing Economics

Please note that the current official website of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Wellbeing Economics can be found at https://wellbeingeconomics.co.uk.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Wellbeing Economics was formed in 2009. And after a short break the group was reconstituted in December 2018. It was and is an officially recognised cross-party group of MPs and Lords in the UK Parliament.

The group seeks to highlight how wellbeing serves as a valuable and pragmatic framing for making policy decisions and for setting a vision for the UK. Wellbeing draws attention to the diversity and interdependence of issues and interventions that affect us in our lives and the complex and complementary roles that different government departments and policies can play in improving outcomes. The APPG will therefore play a convening role across parties and government departments and look at different levels of intervention (national – local – individual) to identify where the biggest gains can be made for the lives of people in the UK, drawing on specific examples, challenges and contexts and building on existing knowledge and evidence.

The What Works Centre for Wellbeing now provides the Secretariat for the reconstituted group, which was formerly provided by New Economics Foundation.

The original stated reason for it’s formation was as follows:

Formed in March 2009, it exists to:
– Provide a forum for discussion of wellbeing issues and public policy in Parliament;
– Promote enhancement of wellbeing as an important government goal;
– Encourage the adoption of wellbeing indicators as complimentary measures of progress to GDP;
– Promote policies designed to enhance wellbeing.

Co-Chair: Jon Cruddas MP
Co-Chair: Baroness Claire Tyler
Vice-Chair: David Lammy MP
Vice-Chair: Sir Peter Bottomley MP
Vice-Chair: Lord Richard Layard
Vice-Chair: Lord Gus O’Donnell
